Bone casing tape, looks like a ½” or 3/4" wide ribbon. It is in fact, a channel which bones can be slid into. The advantage to bone casing tape is that two layers of coutil are not necessary in the construction of a corset. The casing gets stitched to the garment before the bones are slid into the casing.

Made of tightly woven 100% cotton or a cotton viscose blend, bone casing is dyeable and durable.

Certain time periods saw single layer corsets and bone casing tape while others saw two layers of fabric. If two layers of coutil is used then bone casing tape is not required. Today the decision is a matter of choice.

One rule of thumb could be “the more bone casings you require, the less likely you're going to use bone casing tape.” This is because a lot of bone casings, if done with bone casing tape can add bulk.
