WHAT'S YOUR SEWING I.Q.?
We offer classes to meet the needs of a variety of teen
and adult sewists on different skill levels. As our class line-up grows,
we will add more challenging classes. Each class is rated according to skill
level:
1. BEGINNER
Never used a sewing machine. SEWING MACHINE BASICS and the BAGS
FOR BEGINNERS classes are a pre-requisite to all of the classes
offered. These
classes are highly recommended
for all levels! Add the Pattern
Reading class to really be ready to go.
2. BEYOND BEGINNER
You have taken SEWING MACHINE BASICS and the BAGS FOR BEGINNERS.
You are ready for LEVEL 2 classes such as pillows, simple garments
and accessories.
3. INTERMEDIATE
You are familiar with your sewing machine and have worked on and/or completed
several projects on your own or in a sewing
class. You are ready for more
challenging projects like a Corset Making class! You understand the
basics of sewing and are familiar with handling fabric and are interested
in learning
more sewing techniques such as making buttonholes,
zippers, clothing, and reading and following commercial patterns.
4. RETURNING or RE-ENTRY BEGINNER
It’s been awhile since you have sewn anything, and you need a few refreshers,
or you may have some gaps in knowledge that are stopping you from trying
more new and challenging projects.
CUSTOM DESIGNED CLASSES
If you and two (or more friends) wish to arrange a custom-designed class sewing
a project of your choice, please let us know,
and we will arrange it! Prices
are dependant the number of sessions required.
PRIVATE INSTRUCTION
If you seek one-on-one private instruction with one of our fabulous instructors,
we can match you up!
LAB TIME
FarthingalesLA has a large class room that is available for lab time when
classes are not being held. We have a beautiful double-wide cutting table
on wheels, ironing board and Iron, and we have machines available for on-site
rental too! No drop-ins are allowed – please call for schedule. You
automatically get one evening of lab time with some of our more extensive
classes so you
can be sure to get finished.
I am a Beginner – Why can’t I sign up for a garment construction class
first?
If this is your first adventure with a sewing class, you are not ready to
sew a garment until you get to know your machine in the SEWING MACHINE
BASICS class.
The class projects after that are designed to be finished in one session (totebags,
pillows), whereas garment construction classes take a minimum of three
sessions and involve learning new terminology and new techniques which can
be overwhelming and easily forgotten for a New Sewist.
Also, if you have ever looked at an instruction sheet for commercial patterns
(Vogue, McAlls, Butterick, Simplicity) and you find them confusing, first
learn the language and terminology, so you can read them with confidence.
Take our PATTERN READING class. Taking classes in order
increase your chances of success. How well would you do in grade 4 if
you had never
been to grades 1-3?
CUSTOM DESIGNED SEWING EVENTS We will design an event for your group
