Farthingales Midwest stocks a few corset and costume patterns from various
time periods, all are contemporary drafts based on historical
references, but use modern-day body
measurements. These patterns are not standardized
and we recommend making
a mockup of any corset or costume pattern
before cutting
your good fabric. We have tested most
of these patterns, but not all.
What is a mockup?
A mockup is a test garment made from scrap or inexpensive
fabric. A mockup is used to test the fit and style lines
of a garment. A mockup is crucial in corset building, as
the corset has to fit the body so perfectly. The length of
a corset is more important than the circumference; if a corset
is too short it will not cover the breasts as desired. If
it's too long the bones may poke into the underarm, and it
will be uncomfortable. Making a mockup will discover these
potential problems early enough to do something to avoid
them.
We strongly recommend the Victorian corset by Laughing
Moon Mercantile and use it in all of our corset workshops.
